This paper presents the beam-wave interaction mechanism in a three-cavity, W-band gyroklystron amplifier. The investigation has been carried out using nonlinear, time-dependent, multimode analysis and PIC simulation. The cavities resonate at a higher order TE021 mode and operate in fundamental harmonic. Mode competition has been considered for the investigation and it predicted the output power in the operating mode as well as in the competing modes. The analysis and simulation results predicted a peak output power ~ 330 kW at 93.2 GHz with 25% electronic efficiency and saturated gain of 23.42 dB, which are in good agreement with the reported experiments. © Anita Publications.
