Particle accelerators are typical application of high power RF sources like Klystron, Inductive output tube, Tetrode, planar triode etc. This paper reviews more than two decade long operation of 60 kW, KY-400 Multi-beam Klystron (MBK) tube based RF power amplifier in Indus-2 Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS) at Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT). Klystrons are known for their small footprint and high power capabilities. This Klystron is a six beam six cavity vacuum tube with dispenser type cathode working at –20 kV beam voltage and 5 A beam current. Owing to its electrical ruggedness, Klystron amplifier requires minimal maintenance and offers a reliable solution for particle accelerator application. Indus-2 SRS facility is operated round the clock to meet material science research requirements, this puts stringent performance and minimum down time requirements on RF systems. In SRS machine, RF fields determine longitudinal dynamics of electron beam and require amplitude and phase stability of RF field in the order of ±1% and ±1°. Field programmable gate array (FPGA) based digital Low Level RF (LLRF) systems with response time in the order of hundred microseconds, have been deployed to cater these requirements. This paper presents Klystron tube based high power RF system of Indus-2. It highlights operational, control and maintenance part of overall amplifier system. © Anita Publications.
